Yann Martel
When Yann Martel's Life of Pi was published in this country in the summer of 2002, few would have predicted that in a few short months the relatively unkown Canadian writer would go on to win the Man-Booker Prize. Since then, the astonishing story of the intrepid Pi Patel and the tiger Richard Parker's journey across the Pacific Ocean together – in a little boat the size of the world, the size of imagination – has become an international bestseller.
In October 2003, writer and Fiction Editor of Ninth Letter, Philip Graham had an extended phone conversation with Martel, portions of which now reside here. Graham and Martel discuss Life of Pi and also a new book that Martel was working on at the time of their conversation.
